Thrombosis and Venous Thromboembolism Research at MMRI

The MMRI is diversifying and expanding it research portfolio. One new area is thrombosis or blood clot research with a focus on deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Together DVT and PR are called venous thromboembolism ( VTE ).

Current research efforts aim to help doctors stratify and treat patients with DVT and PE by:

  • Discovering novel imaging strategies/biomarkers of disease.
  • Testing novel therapies to promote quicker DVT/PE resolution while decreasing tissue injury
  • Developing clinically relevant models of DVT and PE to advance the understanding of VTE

“Current treatments and lack of advancements, prove that we do not know enough about the biological mechanisms that drive the disease and its sequelae.” -Comment on VTE by Chase Kessinger, Junior Facility
