1.Assistant or Associate Professor

The Masonic Medical Research Institute seeks a basic or translational investigator to join the Cardiovascular Institute at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.  We are looking for outstanding, dynamic individuals to bring intellectual leadership and rigorous scholarship to our exciting program.  The position offers opportunities and resources for the successful candidate to build upon existing research efforts and create new collaborations with basic, clinical, and translational research leaders within the MMRI and other upstate New York area affiliated hospitals and institutions.  The successful candidate will be provided with significant support to continue developing his or her own independent research.  We expect the applicant to have an MD, PhD, or both.  We are particularly interested in individuals with research experience in cardiovascular genetics, metabolism, inflammation, or heart failure, though outstanding investigators in any area of cardiovascular research will be considered.  The successful candidate should also have an established track record of scholarly achievement.   A successful track record of grant writing is critical.  Faculty rank will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

2. Animal Care Technician

The Animal Care Technician’s primary responsibility is to provide basic husbandry, handling, restraint and health surveillance of laboratory animals in compliance with local regulatory requirements. This individual will also provide record keeping of laboratory species, their environments, and provide basic technical assistance (i.e., restraint, injections, bleeds) to other technicians and researchers.

Job Responsibilities

• Perform routine animal husbandry and welfare duties as directed.
• Support research by providing basic technical services to research investigators.
• Supply appropriate food and water for animals housed in the vivarium.
• Clean and provide animal housing and associated materials/equipment within assigned animal rooms.
• Observe and report status of animal health, food and water consumption, appearance, behavior; provide support in animal health monitoring and basic veterinary medical treatment as prescribed by the Manager of Animal Facilities.
• Observe and record vivarium environmental conditions.
• Perform sanitation duties within assigned animal rooms and vivarium areas.
• Maintain and perform housekeeping of facility support areas.
• Support cage wash equipment operations and maintenance.
• Adhere to Masonic Medical Research Institute and departmental safety policies and departmental SOPs and guidelines while demonstrating competency in facility safety protocols.
• Establish and maintain appropriate and quality communication, teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation.


• Educational Background:
High school degree or GED required; Associates or BS/BA in related field preferred AALAS certification at the ALAT level preferred
• Work Experience:
Experience working in a laboratory animal setting required. In general, a colleague at this level will have 1 year of experience.
Basic computer knowledge such as email, online forms, web-based training and other basic programs.
• Physical Requirements
Ability to demonstrate level of technical skills and abilities.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work standing up lifting items above shoulder level for extended periods of time.
Ability to perform repetitive physical activities such as: pushing and pulling racks of caging, lifting bags of feed and bedding, reaching, stooping and bending. A functional Capacity Evaluation may be required.
• Experience working in a research setting preferred.
• All colleagues should have functional knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, calendar management and Internet Explorer time tracking and document management. (e.g. SharePoint, Activity Tracker) Knowledge and use of other systems based upon job function may be required.

3.Post-doctoral Positions

a) Post-doctoral positions are available for highly motivated and talented MDs and/or PhDs who want to pursue a successful career in understanding how protein-tyrosine kinases and phosphatases relate to cardiac development and disease.  Specifically, these positions will focus on elucidating the fundamental mechanisms underlying both congenital heart disease and end-stage heart failure and utilize novel technologies, such as iPSCs and CRISPR-Cas9, in vivo mouse model systems, and molecular biology techniques to decipher the aberrant developmental, molecular signaling, and disease mechanisms in the heart.

b) Post-doctoral position immediately available at the Masonic Medical Research Institute to examine molecular genetic and epigenetic mechanisms controlling cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. A dedicated, self-motivated scientist holding a Ph.D. or equivalent degree with experience in molecular biology, biochemistry and animal handling (preferred) is sought. Comprehensive novel technologies including chromatin immunoprecipitation, RNA-seq, state of the art imaging among others will be used in iPSC, primary cardiac cells and genetically modified mice to study abnormal gene regulation, chromatin structure and molecular signaling in the diseased heart. The candidate will be offered a competitive salary.
